The game's interface doesn't scale up, making some fonts very hard to read. Unless you've got a very large monitor I wouldn't recommend going above 1280 x 720. You can grab it here (I recommend the installer version), install it to anywhere but your Jagged Alliance 2 directory, and point its launcher to the game itself. It fixes some old crashes, adds custom resolution support and even supports Linux and Mac. While a combination of Windows compatibility modes and deleting intro videos is the most direct way to get the Gold version behaving, the easiest is a fix-pack called Stracciatella. Fortunately, there are workarounds, and it's worth playing without mods at least once to learn the ropes. Unfortunately if you own the older Jagged Alliance 2 Gold pack on Steam (or the original disc version), you may hit problems running it on Windows 10. You should be fine if you own the GOG version of Jagged Alliance 2, or the Classic Complete bundle on Steam. While many of the versions of the game available have hammered out the kinks for you, not all have. Jagged Alliance 2 is from an awkward era of Windows games where backwards compatibility struggles. While their output has tapered off in the past year or two, and site reshuffles have made some older mods hard to access, it's hard to go wrong with Jagged Alliance 2 v1.13.
JA2 has also spawned an insular but extremely productive mod scene, mostly on The Bear's Pit forums. Part XCOM, part A-Team, players manage and command a ragtag band of vaguely cartoonish mercenaries on a mission to liberate an impoverished banana republic from its tyrannical queen. Jagged Alliance 2 is still one of the best turn-based squad tactics games around, its own sequels falling short of its consummate majesty. I'm pretty certain they'll be in the unofficial "unstable revisions", since that's what I'm currently using.Every other Monday, Dominic gives you a reason to dust off one of your old games and dive into its mods with Modder Superior. HOWEVER, I'm not sure if you'll find these in the "official" 1.13 release (4870). All you have to do now is copy those three files into the main game directory, and you'll be good to go. In there, you'll find files ddraw.dll, libwine.dll, and wine3d.dll. There you should find another folder named Windows Compatibility fixes, and there you should find a zip file called Windows 8 Fix. Now that you've downloaded 1.13, open the Docs folder from the main game directory. Is there a way to speed things up? Everything else is fine: no glitches, freezes and crashes it's just extreme slomo. I don't think that there is a driver problem. The problem occurs on my laptop (Thinkpad X220, i5 with Intel HD) and my desktop (Phenom 2 with Geforce 460GTX). It's not listed under compatible OS but I've tried it anyway.
